BISSELL is a family-owned company that has led the homecare industry for over five generations. Since the very beginning, BISSELL has been dedicated to researching and understanding the lives and cleaning needs of its customers. This commitment continues today, with practical and innovative cleaning solutions that are inspired by real life.
Keeping Homes Clean Since 1876
Founded in Grand Rapids, Michigan, BISSELL’s story began in 1876 when Melville and Anna Bissell owned a crockery shop. To deal with the dust and breakages in their store, Melville created a carpet sweeper that quickly gained popularity. Demand was so high that BISSELL was soon producing over 1,000 sweepers a day.
When Melville passed away in 1889, Anna Bissell took the reins of the company, becoming the first female CEO in the United States. She fiercely protected the company’s patents and expanded BISSELL’s reach across North America and Europe. By the late 1890s, BISSELL even earned Royal approval when Queen Victoria decreed that all royal palaces should be “Bisselled” every week.
A History of Innovation
BISSELL has consistently been at the forefront of cleaning technology:
1956: Introduced the manual carpet shampooer, freeing people from scrubbing carpets by hand.
1979: Launched the first BISSELL deep cleaning machine with its own water tank.
1980s–90s: Released the Big Green Clean Machine® and the PowerGroom® upright vacuum.
2005: Developed the SpotBot®, the first portable deep cleaner designed for homes with pets.
The BISSELL Pet Foundation
Recognising that pets are part of the family, BISSELL has worked to make pet ownership easier by creating cleaning tools designed for life with animals. In 2011, Cathy Bissell founded the BISSELL Pet Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to ending pet homelessness. To date, the foundation has raised millions of dollars to support shelters, rescues, and adoption programmes across the United States.
Today and Beyond
Still proudly family-owned, BISSELL remains passionate about helping families keep their homes clean. Whether it’s muddy footprints, pet hair, or everyday spills, BISSELL products are built to make cleaning easier, faster, and more effective. From carpets and upholstery to hard floors and pet messes, BISSELL helps you embrace the moments that matter most — living in a cleaner, fresher home.
